  • [current mood|determined]

Words cannot express how grateful I am for the kind words of encouragement and support that you all left after my last entry. Life is hard enough as it is, but it is comforting to know that there are amazing people like all of you out there who are willing to go out of their way to cheer up someone they have never met in person. Thanks for reminding me that I will never be alone. And thanks for being my "angels"! I'm truly touched.

I talked to the doctor who is treating me for depression, and he was surprised to hear that I was struggling, especially since my medication has been so effective over the past year and a half. Just to be on the safe side, he had me come in to have a blood drawn for a thyroid screen. He told me that a slow thyroid could have the same symptoms-such as moodiness, fatigue, and weight gain-as depression. Why he didn't test me at my initial visit is beyond me, but I guess it doesn't matter because my results came back normal. Oh well. I have an appointment with my gynecologist on Tuesday, and I'm sure she'll want blood drawn, so I'll just ask for all tests the lab can run on the sample. During my last visit, she mentioned that I should probably undergo a blood sugar test, since my paternal grandfather and an uncle have diabetes. Although I highly doubt that I have diabetes, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't have much else to write about today, so here is a survey that I've had on the backburner since June. Thanks again for cheering me up!

    1. If I were a month, I would be: March...unpredictable March. I think my moods best match the "in like a lion, out like a lamb" weather pattern of our third month. There are days when I'm sunny and warm, and there are days when I'm cold, dark, and depressing.
    2. If I were a day of the week, I would be: Sunday-laidback,lazy, and family oriented.
    3. If I were a time of the day, I would be: 2-4 P.M....the afternoon lull...the time where the working day starts to wind down and everyone is ready for a nap!
    4. If I were a planet, I would be: Saturn- the ruler of Capricorn and co-ruler of Aquarius, and the planet of melancholy, seriousness, responsibility, and the off beat sense of humor.
    5. If I were a sea animal, I would be: a sea turtle...just going with the flow, but having the ability to retreat into my shell when things become too overwhelming.
    6. I were a direction, I would be: I dunno...west, perhaps?
    7. If I were a piece of furniture, I would be: A rocking chair. I'd like to be out on the front porch on a warm summer evening...a silent eavesdropper to lively conversations and debates, or whispered secrets.
    8. If I were a historical figure, I would be: Hmmm...I've always identified with Clara Barton, the reknowned Civil War nurse and founder of the American Red Cross. Like Clara, I was painfully shy as a child but had to work to overcome this problem in order to teach.
    9. If I were a liquid, I would be: Orange juice- sweet with an acidic bite.
    10. If I were a stone, I would be: An opal. It appears hard and strong, but expose it to heat or pressure and it can crack.
    11. If I were a tree, I would be: Something different, like a bonsai.
    12. If I were a bird, I would be: A redheaded woodpecker
    13. If I were a tool, I would be: A spade...I love to dig for dirt (gossip).
    14. If I were a flower/plant, I would be: A sunflower. I have a big, round head and try to find the light in most situations.
    15. If I were a kind of weather, I would be: Windy
    16. If I were a mythical creature, I would be: A mermaid...I love the water.
    17. If I were a musical instrument, I would be: A violin. The music can be upbeat, bouncy, and happy one minute...depressing and lonely the next.
    18. If I were an animal, I would be: A cat. I can be aloof until I really get to know a person. Plus, I can sleep as much as one! And I'm obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness.
    19. If I were a color, I would be: turquoise...not quite blue, not quite green.
    20. If I were an emotion, I would be: Anxiety.
    21. If I were a vegetable, I would be: A carrot- what else?
    22. If I were a sound, I would be: A sigh.
    23. If I were an element, I would be: Air.
    24. If I were a car, I would be: A red Volkswagen Beetle.
    25. If I were a song, I would be: "She's A Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones, just because I like it.
    26. If I were a movie, I would be directed by: Michael Moore.
    27. If I were a book, I would be written by: Jane Green. Okay, I know she's British and all, but Jemima J. is so me.
    28. If I were food, I would be: Apple pie ala mode.
    29. If I were a place, I would be: Washington D.C.
    30. If I were a piece of material, I would be: A piece of comfy, absorbant terry cloth.
    31. If I were a taste, I would be: Sugar. I eat enough candy as it is!
    32. If I were a scent, I would be: Again, candy.
    33. If I were a religion, I would be: Hinduism
    34. If I were a word, I would be: Paranoia.
    35. If I were a body part, I would be: Teeth.
    36. If I were a facial expression, I would be: A shy smile.
    37. If I were a subject in school, I would be: History...I have an excellent memory.
    38. If I were a cartoon character, I would be: The consensus is that I would be a mix of Donkey from Shrek and Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid.
    39. If I were a shape, I would be: A square, daddy-o!
    40. If I were a number, I would be: Number 8- kind of reminds me of my shape.

Hey Julie, it's great to see you back again. We are all beind you 100% and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say I hope you feel better again very soon! I sure hope the doctors will help you to get past your depression. If it is a slow thyroid, I'm sure they can recommend something to monitor and treat it. My mom and sister have had similar issues with their thyroids.

Great survey! Let's see, my answers would definitely be the same for numbers 2, 4, 9, 18 (of course!), 19, 24, 25 (any Stones song for me, actually!), 31, 32, and 34!

Take care of yourself, Wonder Twin! Talk to you again soon!

    Hi, Julie!

Nice to see that we have both gone with greenish layouts! Great minds do think alike...

What a week for both of us, I must say! I think that we should get together and have a conversation about our lives. Heheh...Of course, it would take a whole year just to do so.

It is almost like you are in the same boat with me. You and the doctors know something is wrong, but no one is sure what it is so thousands of tests are ran to find out. It totally sucks...

I hope that they figure out something for you. Just remember that I am here for you, whenever and wherever.

Have a great week, Julie. You are in my prayers. God bless.

Hey, I didn't missed your earlier post for some reason so I didn't get a chance to extend my well-wishes... depression is something that SO many people struggle with, myself included. It may take a lot of tweaking with medications to get it right, and it may take some life adjustments (career? city?) to address the underlying problems. If you haven't already, I would seriously consider talk therapy with a psychiatrist or counselor, in addition to medication. Statistically proven to be helpful! Don't worry about the weight gain (I'm having the opposite problem - this is the thinnest I've been since puberty, and it is NOT intentional) and just focus on your *health*. Good luck and post often! We are all here to help.

I wanna see Mean Girls too!

Hope u keep getting better. I know depression sucks big time.

I think some times doctors prescribe medication for the symptoms instead of looking into what is causing them. I guess they see the same thing too often and it becomes a routine to give the medication and not do the tests.

You are an amazing and wonderful friend.  I read ina  magazine recently about a woman who had her thyriod checked by her doc, and it came back normal.  Then she sought a professional, an internist,(is that the word?  The folks who work directly with blood and can pick up the minutest detail) anyway, when that test came back she did infact have a thyriod problem.  My suggestion is if you have insurance I'd have one of them check it out.  (((((Hugs!)))))
